If you choose to zone heat with a solid fuel burning stove or insert, you are making a choice which has the potential to save you serious money over time. A woodburning insert or stove is known to be an effective heat source. However, a woodstove will be the most high maintenance appliance in your house. Bear this in mind if you're an old guy with a bad back. Bagged wood pellets are much less labor intensive than wood, produce less than 1% ash, and deliver hours of steady, even heat. Anthracite coal heat is low cost, intense and long lasting heat, but with a 10% ash content.
Natural gas or propane (LP) fireplaces, stoves or inserts can keep your family room or living room toasty warm and dust-free. Your net heating bill will be reduced since you can turn down your main house thermostat. Gas is a very clean and very convenient choice for zone heating.
As with any major appliance purchase, buy the best you can afford. My dad taught that "the bitterness of low quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten". Please buy from an established local dealer such as ourselves. We provide installation and service to our customers. Do your research online, but don't buy on the internet or from Home Cheapo because you will be on your own when you have problems. And there will be problems. Once you have done your due diligence come in and we'll be glad to show you our stuff. We're proud of our products and stand behind everything we sell. An excellent source of wood burning information can be found at woodheat.org. Learn about pellet at pelletheat.org. Stay warm and save money!
Thank you.
Good Luck,
