Why do you need my fireplace serial number to service it?
- Fireplaces change internally over time, even with the same model name. The serial number tells us which generation you have so you get the correct valves, blowers, gaskets, sensors, or boards for gas fireplace service.
- Manufacturers track recalls, service bulletins, and mandatory upgrades by serial range. Without it, no one can verify whether your unit has a known safety issue. NFPA 211 requires appliances be maintained per their listing and condition.
- Clearances, venting limits, and combustion settings can vary by production run. The serial number ties you to the exact tested listing that keeps your home safe.
- Warranty eligibility, prior repairs, and manufacturer support all hinge on your fireplace serial number. Guessing at your serial number costs time, money and risks mistakes.
- With the serial number, a gas service tech can prepare correctly. Without it, techs are troubleshooting blind. That leads to delays and repeat trips.
- Having your serial number is useful. It is searchable on most fireplace manufacturer databases. At the very least, if you figure out your manufacturer you can call them and they will hopefully help you figure out your make and model.
Where to Find a Gas Fireplace or Wood Stove Serial Number?
On the ratings plate! Where is the ratings plate? There are three common locations for a ratings plate with serial number information for your gas fireplace, wood stove or pellet insert.
- Behind the lower louver or access panel.
- Inside the firebox (side or floor).
- On the back or underside of most wood and pellet stoves.
We find more often than not a ratings plate will be a large silver piece of metal with a bunch of information on it. Things like the make, model, serial number and efficiency numbers are all at the tip of your fingers. A ratings plate should be left with your heating appliance for future reference. If you want to keep a record of the information, take a picture!

My Ratings Plate is Worn Away and I Can’t Read It! What Should I Do?
- Look for secondary identification Many units have more than one identifier. Some other places to look: Inside the lower control compartment, on the side or rear of the firebox, on the appliance chassis behind trim, sometimes stamped into the metal, not printed.
- Visual model confirmation (with limits) Experienced technicians can often identify the make, manufacturer and model. If you send a picture to an NFI certified company near you, it should be possible for them to help you.
- Take a picture of your unit and send it into the super sleuths on /r/woodstoving or /r/fireplaces.
- If you do not have a ratings plate and you have no options, take a picture of your unit and post it on social media or ask an AI chatbot of your choosing. You would be surprised what ChatGPT can find out about your fireplace or stove.
